Do I need ETIAS to travel from the USA to Madrid?
The question
Will I need an ETIAS if travelling from the USA to Madrid in early August 2026?
Our answer
No — if you are travelling from the United States to Madrid in early August 2026, you do not need ETIAS.
ETIAS is still not in operation. The European Union has not yet started accepting ETIAS applications and will announce the official launch date in advance.
You should still make sure you meet the normal Schengen entry requirements for a visa-exempt U.S. traveller, including having a valid passport and staying within the permitted short-stay period.
Please note that the Entry/Exit System (EES) is already operational, so your entry and exit information may be recorded electronically at border control.
Note: This is general information and not legal or travel advice. Entry requirements can change and depend on your nationality, passport, and individual circumstances. We recommend checking the official EU travel information shortly before departure.
