How do I prove my absences from the EU when renewing my TIE?

The question

How do I give evidence of leaving and returning to the EU when I renew my TIE for two or three years?

Our answer

When renewing a TIE/residence authorization, the immigration authority may need to verify that you have complied with the residence conditions, including any limits on absences from Spain that apply to your type of permit.
You normally do not submit a special “EU entry/exit certificate” automatically. Evidence can include:
Your passport showing entry and exit stamps, where stamps exist. Boarding passes or travel tickets. Flight, ferry, train or other travel confirmations. Other documents showing your presence outside or inside Spain if specifically requested.
Since the Entry/Exit System (EES) is now operating for many short-stay non-EU travellers, some border movements are recorded electronically, but EES does not apply in the same way to holders of residence permits/TIE cards.
The important issue is the type of residence you are renewing, because permitted absences differ between temporary residence, long-term residence, family-member permits and other categories.
If you tell us which TIE/residence authorization you currently hold, we can give you a more precise answer about the absence limits and what evidence is normally useful.
Note: This is general information and not legal or tax advice. Renewal requirements and permitted absences depend on the exact residence authorization and your individual circumstances. We recommend confirming the requirements for your permit with the Spanish immigration authorities or a qualified immigration professional.
