My digital nomad authorisation was approved. Do I need to register as autónomo within a month?

The question

I recently received approval for my digital nomad visa and was told I need to register as autónomo urgently, within one month, to avoid problems later. I have done the fingerprints and have a Social Security number. Is that right, and what does it involve?

Our answer

If your digital nomad authorization was approved on the basis that you will work as self-employed (autónomo), then you should complete the corresponding tax and Social Security registrations promptly and in line with the conditions of your authorization. The important point is not simply the TIE appointment itself, but that the activity and Social Security situation match what was declared in your application.
At the moment, MoveToSpain provides informational guidance by email, but we do not directly handle autónomo registrations or act as a gestor, so we do not have a service fee to quote for completing the registration on your behalf.
For the autónomo setup, a gestor can normally help you with:
Registration with the Tax Agency (AEAT). Registration in RETA / Social Security, if applicable. Selecting the correct activity code. IVA and IRPF obligations. Quarterly tax filings. Confirming whether a Social Security agreement or certificate of coverage from another country changes your obligations.
Since your authorization was already approved on July 14, I would recommend dealing with this soon rather than waiting for the physical TIE card, and showing the gestor your approval resolution so they can verify the exact conditions attached to it.
Note: This is general information and not tax or legal advice. Tax and Social Security obligations depend on the exact basis of your digital nomad authorization, your employment/self-employment structure, and any applicable international Social Security agreement. We recommend consulting a Spanish tax advisor (gestor), Social Security, or a qualified immigration professional if you are unsure.
