Our cruise first enters the EU at Tarragona. Where do we register for EES?
The question
My wife and I will first arrive in the EU at the Tarragona cruise port, on a cruise from Istanbul in October 2026. Does the Tarragona terminal have EES machines where we can register? If not, when and where in Spain do we go through the EES process?
Our answer
By the time your cruise arrives in Tarragona on October 31, 2026, the EU Entry/Exit System (EES) will already be fully operational. The EES has been fully operational at the external border crossing points of participating European countries since April 10, 2026.
You do not need to go somewhere separately in Spain to “register” for EES. Registration takes place as part of the normal border-control process when you first cross an external Schengen border where EES applies.
For your itinerary, the key point is where you first enter the Schengen area. Your cruise departs from Istanbul, but if it calls at another Schengen port before Tarragona, your first EES entry may be processed there instead. If Tarragona is your first Schengen entry point, the Spanish border authorities at the port should process the EES formalities as part of immigration control.
On a first EES entry, eligible non-EU short-stay travellers can expect passport details and biometric data (facial image and fingerprints) to be registered. You should simply follow the instructions from the cruise line and border officers; there is no separate EES application to complete in advance.
Spain currently does not support the EU “Travel to Europe” mobile app for EES pre-registration, so you should not rely on the app for your Tarragona arrival.
Note: This is general information and not legal or travel advice. Border procedures can depend on your nationality, passport, visa status, and the exact cruise itinerary. We recommend confirming the first Schengen port of entry with Oceania Cruises shortly before departure and following the instructions of the border authorities.
